Avoid Lecithin Side Effects by Finding the Right Nutritional Supplements

Because of the apparent popularity of nutritional supplementation, many people are wantonly consuming lecithin with regards to various lecithin side effects due to overdose. The body needs just the correct formulation and daily dosage. Anything deficient or in excess of the different minerals and vitamins could be harmful.

Nutritional Supplements

Lecithin pertains to a family of yellowish and brownish fatty substances naturally occurring in animal and plant tissues. This group is normally composed of phosphoric acid, choline, fatty acids, glycerol, glycolipids, triglycerides and phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol.

Nutritional Supplements

Lecithin is widely regarded as an effective and safe food additive. In fact, it is included in the "Generally Recognized as Safe" list of the United States Food and Drugs Administration.

This group of essential fatty acids are key components of the cell membranes. They can be totally metabolized, making it not toxic for human consumption.

There are various studies showing beneficial effects of lecithin supplementation. One study has showed that lecithin derived from soy beans can significantly lower the unhealthy levels of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in the blood stream. It has also the concomitant effect in increasing the amount of HDL or "good" cholesterol in the body. This study by a team led by MA Jimenez was published in the Journal of Nutrition last July 1990.

Experts, however, raised concerns that unregulated consumption of lecithin has the potential of causing unwanted side effects. People taking niacin to treat their high LDL cholesterol level likewise need more lecithin or choline in their diets or nutritional supplements. This is because niacin has the effect of depleting choline amount inside the cellular membranes.

Lecithin derived from egg yolks should be purified first before being consumed, especially by those people under cholesterol treatment. While egg-derived lecithin per se is not potentially harmful, its unpurified form can largely increase the over-all level of LDL cholesterol in the body.

Low lecithin level in the body cannot cause immediate disruption of certain bodily functions. However, excessive consumption of the same specific fatty substances could potentially cause varying harmful lecithin side effects. These include gastrointestinal tract problems, weight gain, loss of appetite, low blood pressure, diarrhea, rashes, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and unpleasant body and breath odor.

Most common source of lecithin are soya beans. Majority of nutritional supplements contain soya-derived lecithin. This presents one basic problem.

Soya-derived lecithin, especially when taken in excess of the recommended daily dosage, may cause various allergic reactions. Substances derived from soya are potential allergens. These reactions include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, swelling of the face and tough, shortness of breathing, difficulty and pain in swallowing, excessive perspiration, low blood pressure, fainting and even death in worst cases.

When buying nutritional supplements, it is important to choose only those with the right formulation. A manufacturing company's adherence to the most stringent production guidelines should always be a key factor in buying them. It is equally essential also to buy those made from all-natural ingredients, lest one ends up using synthetic products mimicking natural substances.
